Ah, what a day. Daner woke this morning a little unmotivated to do much, so Dad let him relax for most of the morning. He had a lot of questions and doubt about losing his hair. Yesterday, I was sitting on his hospital bed and he was showing me that he had a bunch of hair on his bed. I looked at him in question and my mom said, "Daner, did you pack the cat with you?" I actually was wondering if the cat had gotten in my hospital bag and sat on his fresh pillow cases and then Daner touched the top of his head and big clumps of hair were in his hand. I was like duh Jamie, it's his hair. This whole thing seems so surreal to me still. Daner's dad told me this morning today was the day for the buzz party because it falls out fast. So we called some family and a few of Dane's friends, ones I could grab in about 20 minutes, to head to the hospital. Before we headed to the hospital, Daner ate a good size lunch with coaching from his Dad. Then his nurse brought in a delicious shake to drink before his cat scan, and when I say delicious I mean disgusting! It was in a big water bottle and Daner drank a ton of it with more coaching from his Dad. The doctors wanted a cat scan done because he has been running a low fever for several days and they had put him on a prescription for it in case he had an infection, but were concerned why the fever was still present. Fungal infections can be really dangerous and they wanted to make sure their wasn't something hiding in his body that they needed to treat. The results came back and they didn't find anything, so we will pray that the fevers are just from his lumbar punctures. I took my parents to the airport to go back to Virginia and was happy they got to spend a little over a week with Dane and my other kiddos. Precious moments.I picked up a few of Dane's school buddies and headed to the hospital with Dane's friends and siblings for the buzz party. Nana, Papa, Uncle Devin, Sara, and Cole were there waiting when we arrived. We came to Dane's floor and crowded in a little family lounge with family and friends as well as Uncles and cousins via skype to join in on the buzzing. Dane's cousin Cole declared that he was going first with a huge smile! If Dane was going to go bald, so was he! So he and his brother Dallin (on skype) started buzzing at the same time. Cole was so enthusiastic about the whole idea, it was so touching. Uncle Kasey had already bicked his own head and worked on his 2 year old Cody's head. Dane's brother Ty jumped in the chair next and told us he wanted to buzz his head for his brother, Dane. Oh it was precious and I have always adored his long hair. He had big smiles the whole time too and I was touched by his attitude and confidence. Daner helped Dad buzz Ty, adorable! Uncle Devin jumped in the chair and was buzzed while Uncle Bret and cousin Kyle buzzed their heads too. Oh the energy was so great and everyone was smiling and cheering and laughing. It was fun. Daner's friends, Tyler and Hunter looked a little uneasy afraid someone might grab their hair. It was cute. Now that everyone had showed their excitement and confidence, Dane was ready to have his done. He smiled while Dad and Ty buzzed him even though it was really a tough thing to do as I am sure it was tough for most of them. Papa was clipped last and it was a sweet ending to the party. Dad wanted to buzz his, but during Papa's buzz, Daner had to leave because he wasn't feeling good. Halee went to check on him and Daner told her he didn't want Dad to buzz his head because he was afraid Dad's hair wouldn't grow back. I think Dad was a little disappointed to not be able to join in on the support, but he didn't want Daner to look a him with all he will go through in the upcoming months in fear of his dad's hair! After, we went down to the 2nd floor where it is really sanitized for donuts and milk. It was fun watching everyone be together, family and friends in celebration of Daner. Everyone ate and visited, except Daner. He didn't feel up to the treats and wasn't feeling great, so he just watched everyone taking it all in. Everyone left and I brought him back to his room. We snuggled for awhile and then I talked him into a steamy bath to wash off the hair. I put fresh bedding on for him and sanitized the room, even though housekeeping comes in twice a day to sanitize and mop. Can't be too clean on the cancer wing! (the nurses assure me of this!) Daner felt a little uncomfortable with his new head and cold, but sensitivity it part of the deal. Daner visited with me most of the evening about his feelings. So honest and sincere. I just love my time with him. I took him down to the vacant cafeteria for some dinner and he mostly just enjoyed the the ride because he only ate two bites of his dinner. I guess we should just be happy he is still interested in food and be grateful he ate one meal. Thanks to all of Dane's family and friends who in honor of Dane shaved their heads. We know that the love and support shown to him paved a much smoother transition to the months ahead. We love and appreciate each of you so much.
